"He's really their team MVP."

Dave O'Brien on Jason Bartlett. Let's have a look at the Rays' individual WAR totals in 2008.

  1. Evan Longoria 5.3
  2. B.J. Upton 4.6
  3. James Shields 4.2
  4. Carlos Pena 3.7
  5. Andy Sonnanstine 3.6
  6. Matt Garza 2.9
  7. Carl Crawford 2.7
  8. Akinori Iwamura 2.7
  9. Dioner Navarro 2.7
  10. Grant Balfour 2.2
  11. Gabe Gross 2.2
  12. Scott Kazmir 2.0
  13. Eric Hinske 2.0
  14. Jason Bartlett 1.8
Well, I mean, Gabe Gross and Eric Hinske aside, it sure does seem obvious to me that no one helped the Rays win games more than Jason Fucking Bartlett.

Oh, and as far as that "terrific" defense? At least in 2008. . .

UZR: 1.9
+/-: -1

Yup.

There was an article on the St. Pete Times where the author defended Bartlett being chosen team MVP: http://tinyurl.com/cbu9wb

If value was determined by record while on the DL, then Jeter must not be that valuable. After all, they had a winning record while he was away. /end sarcasm
